The Site is located to the north-east of the village of Castle Hedingham, located on earthworks overlooking the Colne Valley. The Site comprises the Scheduled Monument of Hedingham Castle, and the historic building recording report details five distinct elements of the Site; - The remains of a substantial brick tower that, due to recent tree clearance, has been partially exposed to the south-west of the keep. - A brick buttress and section of brick curtain wall bonded to the south of the bridge leading onto the earthwork. - Four window openings on the western and southern elevations of the keep. - A series of eight window alcoves within the keep (four on the ground-floor and four on the fourthfloor). - The wall-heads of the keep. These structures (or structural elements) were all in need of repair and consolidation, and prior to the commencement of the required stabilisation works, the Historic England Inspector of Ancient Monuments (HEIAM) required the completion of the programme of historic building recording. A Historic England Level 3 survey was undertaken of the brick tower remains, the brick bridge buttress and the windows on the western and southern elevations of the keep. A Level 1 survey was undertaken of the windows alcoves within the keep, and the keep wall heads. The remains of the brick tower and the brick buttress were both cleaned and cleared of vegetation prior to the survey. Ortho-rectified photogrammetry was undertaken of the brick tower, the windows on the keep's western and southern elevations, and the keep wall-heads to produce accurate scaled figures. Detailed photographs were taken of key features of the brick tower and brick buttress, and measurements were taken of key structural features, including brick measurements.
