This paper presents a method for material processing using shock compression, which is based on the projectile impact technique. Regardless of sample geometry–whether powder, bulk material, or thin film–or sample type–including metals, ceramics, semiconductor materials, polymeric materials, and minerals–it is possible to apply shock pressures of tens of GPa to samples weighing just a few grams. In this paper, we present a method for fabricating metastable bulk materials by leveraging the characteristic of applying dynamic pressure over an extremely short time scale.
