Abstract The proliferation of fake news in Nigeria poses a significant threat to national security, exacerbating social unrest, ethnic tensions, and political instability. This paper investigates the critical role of the Nigerian media in combating disinformation. To achieve this, the study combines Media Literacy and Social Responsibility theories as tools of analysis, aided with a mixed-methods approach comprising of quantitative and qualitative data from both primary and secondary sources. With a descriptive and exploratory research design it assesses the effectiveness of fact-checking organizations, digital literacy campaigns, and journalistic ethics. The paper argues that a multi-stakeholder approach involving collaborations among the Nigerian government, civil society, and media institutions is essential for building resilience against fake news. It also uncovers unique challenges within Nigeria’s media landscape, such as weak regulatory frameworks, underfunded press institutions, and the rapid growth of unregulated social media platforms that facilitate misinformation. Ultimately, the paper recommends a strengthened regulatory environment that supports press freedom while ensuring accountability in reporting.
