The Markov Method: Deciphering the Voynich Manuscript (Ms 408) as a Phonosemantic Transcription of Ming Dynasty Medical Texts

ABSTRACT For over a century, the Voynich Manuscript (Beinecke MS 408) has systematically resisted traditional Indo-European linguistic models and cipher-breaking techniques. This paper introduces the Markov Method, a novel analytical framework shifting the paradigm from Western esotericism to Eastern pragmatism. We propose that the manuscript is a 15th-century European merchant’s or physician’s field pharmacopeia, containing a direct phonosemantic transcription of a spoken Southern Chinese dialect (such as Early Cantonese or Min) from the Ming Dynasty era. The mathematical anomalies of the manuscript's text—specifically its exceptionally low entropy, short word lengths, and pervasive word reduplication (e.g., choon choon, shey shey)—perfectly align with the isolating morphological structure and grammatical reduplication inherent to the Sino-Tibetan language family. By treating the European Voynich Alphabet (EVA) characters not as literal ciphers, but as a custom phonetic alphabet capturing initial consonants and tonal rimes, the Markov Method successfully decodes previously impenetrable passages.
