The primordial lizard does not appear as a separate class of animals, but rather as the terrestrial form of this primordial pattern, which internalizes its aquatic environment and carries it onward as an inner ocean. Scales, fur, feathers, chitin, and human skin are described as material variations of the same basic plan, while head, eyes, mouth, four limbs, tail, and egg—external or internal—are identified as unchanging structural features of all so-called terrestrial beings.
