Der Komplex CoII(qpy)(OH2)22+ (qpy = 2,2′:6′,2′′:6′′,2′′′-Quaterpyridin) ist ein effizienter sichtbares Licht-getriebener Katalysator für sowohl Wasseroxidation als auch -reduktion. Er katalysiert die photochemische Sauerstoffentwicklung aus Wasser bei pH 8,0 mit RuII(bpy)32+/S2O82− (λ = 457 nm, max TON = 335, bpy = 2,2′-Bipyridin). Er katalysiert auch die photochemische Wasserstofferzeugung aus IrIII(dF(CF3)ppy)2(dtbbpy)+/TEOA (dF(CF3)ppy = Anion von 2-(2,4-Difluorphenyl)-5-trifluormethylpyridin, dtbbpy = 4,4′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-Bipyridin, TEOA = Triethanolamin) in wässrigem Acetonitril (λ > 420 nm, max TON = 1730).
