A simple analysis is presented of the characteristics of a refractor plate as a scanning device for monochromators. The analysis shows that, although the scan produced by the refractor plate is not linear in time, an improvement can be obtained by using plates of high refractive index, and that optimum linearity is obtained for n=3.79. Further, it is shown that a resolution of better than 0.3 Å can be maintained over a 20 Å scanning interval by correcting for the defocusing effect of the refractor plate. The results are presented so that they can be readily used with any monochromator and refractor plate. The experimental measurements made with a glass plate (n=1.5) are in good agreement with the predictions of this analysis.
