The article analyzes the features of pricing in the freight transportation market. The authors pay special attention to the issues of tariff formation for freight rail transportation, which includes both components that are strictly regulated by the state and market elements. The authors consider the regulatory framework for state regulation of tariffs for freight rail transportation, analyze the current situation, identify the main difficulties and imbalances, confirming this with statistical data on certain types of transported goods, compare the indicators of rail and road transport, demonstrate the situation with the profitability of freight rail transportation. The authors summarize the reasons for the reduction and increase of freight railway tariffs, and present a formula that takes into account all components of the current tariff system in Russia. The authors list the directions of possible improvement of the tariff system, summarizing that a more flexible approach can also increase the profitability of freight rail transport.
