Conceptual foundations of socio-demographic security: the national dimension

The article explores theoretical approaches to defining socio-demographic security as a component of national security. It characterizes the threats facing Ukraine amidst demographic crisis, migration processes, and social inequality. Socio-demographic security is one of the most important elements of the national security system, determining a state’s capacity to develop, preserve, and reproduce its human potential. In today’s globalized world, with certain transformations in social structures and demographic processes, the issue of socio-demographic security becomes particularly relevant. Specifically, it involves not only the quantitative population count but also assessing its quality, including health status, education, living standards, and social cohesion. Declining birth rates, population aging, migration, and a significant deterioration in the nation’s health pose a serious threat to the future of any country. In the national dimension, the conceptual foundations of socio-demographic security are based on the understanding that human capital is a state’s most valuable resource. This, in turn, requires the formation and implementation of effective state policies aimed at supporting families, encouraging birth rates, strengthening the institution of the family, improving the quality of life, and creating favorable conditions for the self-realization of every citizen. An important component is the process of overcoming poverty, social inequality, and unemployment, which, in essence, hinders demographic stability. The study of the conceptual foundations of socio-demographic security in the national dimension is of paramount importance for Ukraine, which is in a state of war, including its tragic consequences, economic problems, and significant migration of Ukrainians. An awareness of the problem will allow for the formation of a systematic approach to its solution, the development of strategies and programs aimed at strengthening socio-demographic security, and ensuring the nation’s well-being in the future. In this article we examined the theoretical foundations and practical aspects of socio-demographic security and analyzed the main threats and ways to overcome them, based on the specifics of the current stage of Ukrainian state-building.
