XVIII. Experiments on the effect of various substances in lowering the point of congelation in water

The experiments which were necessary, in order to determine what effect the admixture of various substances would produce upon the property of water to be cooled below the freezing point, naturally led me to a more particular consideration of the power of such admixtures in making water require a greater degree of cold before it congeals.
