This paper describes experiments which show that hyaluronic acid may affect markedly the partition of diffusible solutes between solutions that contain it and buffer solutions; this effect can be described as the exclusion of the solute from a part of the volume of solution occupied by the hyaluronic acid. Johnston (1955) suggested the occurrence of a large degree of exclusion to explain the effect of hyaluronic acid on the ultracentrifugal sedimentation of serum albumin; however,
Ogston et al. (Sat,) studied this question.
