Abstract In today's era of industrial and economic development, the role of business organizations is no longer limited only to earning profits. It has become essential for industries to contribute to the development of the society in which they operate. This social responsibility is known as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Under CSR, companies spend a portion of their profits on the welfare of society. These initiatives include various programs related to education, health, environmental protection, rural development, women empowerment, skill development, and social welfare. In India, the concept of CSR has gained special importance. According to the Companies Act 2013, companies that meet certain financial criteria are required to spend at least 2 percent of the average net profit of the previous three years on CSR activities. Due to this law, many business organizations are implementing various social initiatives for the development of society. The main objective of this research is to study the CSR management practices implemented by industries in Pune district during the financial year 2019–20 and to understand the impact of these initiatives on social development. Pune district is one of the major industrial districts in Maharashtra, where many large and medium-scale industries operate. These companies implement various programs through their CSR initiatives for the development of the local community. In this research, CSR initiatives of some selected industries in Pune district have been studied. Initiatives carried out in the fields of education, health, environmental protection, rural development, skill training, and women empowerment have been analysed. Both the primary and secondary data have been used for this study. Primary data has been collected through questionnaires, interviews, and direct observation. Secondary data has been obtained from companies' CSR reports, books, research articles, government reports, and internet sources. The study reveals that industries in Pune district have made significant contributions to various social sectors under CSR. In the field of education, improvements in schools, provision of educational materials to students, and digital learning facilities have been implemented. In the health sector, health check-up camps, health awareness programs, and medical facilities have been provided. For environmental protection, activities such as tree plantation, water conservation, and cleanliness campaigns have been conducted. Additionally, for rural development, programs related to drinking water facilities, infrastructure development, and skill training have been implemented. These CSR initiatives have improved the standard of living of people in the local community and have contributed to social development. However, for CSR initiatives to be more effective, good coordination among industries, local administration, and society is necessary. Proper planning, transparent implementation, and regular evaluation of CSR initiatives are also important. Overall, this research clearly indicates that CSR management practices can play an important role in achieving sustainable social development. With proper planning and effective implementation, CSR initiatives can significantly help reduce various social problems and promote the overall development of society.
