A Within‐patient Comparison of Alprenolol and Propranolol in Hypertension

AbstractIn an individually titrated dose cross‐over trial of propranolol and alprenolol in 18 hypertensive patients both drugs were useful as antihypertensive agents although propranolol in the used dosages was found to be more effective and caused a significantly greater reduction of arterial pressure both in the supine position (systolicp<0.05, diastolicp<0.01) and in the erect position (diastolicp<0.0025). Propranolol reduced the heart rate significantly more than alprenolol.
