Daily, many children undergo surgical procedures that cause pain. Despite extensive research on postoperative pain, inadequate pain management remains a problem. To explore children's experiences of pain and postoperative pain management in surgical wards. This qualitative explorative study used individual interviews with children in surgical wards at a university hospital in Norway. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist was used. The participants were 11 children, aged 6-18 years, who were undergoing elective or emergency surgery. Three themes were identified: (1) Children want to know and be involved, (2) Trusting relationships are essential, and (3) Children's experience of pain-relieving strategies. Children want to be involved in decisions about pain management. Positive expectations regarding their surgery help them to cope with postoperative pain. Children may think that nurses see their pain and do not always tell when they are in pain. Therefore, children's pain must be assessed regularly using pain assessment tools. Nurses need to invest time in establishing relationships with their pediatric patients and their parents to provide person-centered care. Children undergoing surgery need individualized preoperative preparation to ensure person-centered care. Nurses should involve children in decisions about pain management. There is still a need to increase the focus on important areas within pediatric pain management in nursing education and to strengthen ongoing training and reflection in clinical practice.
