This article is devoted to the analysis of the ways in which Islamic traditions were reflected in the urban life of Iran in the past and the description of their current state, which was formed under the influence of the multi-vector modernization process that began in the early 20th century. Since that time, Western ideas and technologies have been actively adopted, which has led to a change in the external appearance of cities and their internal structure. The Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI), formed after the 1979 revolution, has taken a course towards building an Islamic state and returning to religious traditions. At the same time, despite the anti-Western rhetoric, the IRI continues to participate in global processes and actively adopts global trends in urban planning, which raises the question of the relationship between traditions and innovations in the modern urban life of Iran, relevant for many modern cities. Based on this, the purpose of this article is to determine the role and significance of Islamic traditions in the cities of Iran. The objectives include: 1) identifying the main aspects of the manifestation of Islamic norms in urban life in Iran; 2) analyzing the structural changes that have occurred in the cities of Iran over the past 100 years; 3) description of the influence of these changes on the role of Islamic traditions and the form of their manifestation. The article concludes that the role of the religious factor in the development of modern Iranian cities has been transformed.
