Names listed in Part II are of two sorts, with asterisk and without asterisk. Those without were derived from requests sent to department heads, division heads, deans or other administrative officers in obtaining information for Part I. Thus persons listed without asterisk are currently teaching in some U.S. college or university listed in Part I. However, since returns from these requests for information remain incomplete, not all persons so teaching are so listed. Those with asterisk were usually derived from membership lists of philosophical societies. To most of these a form letter requesting permission to include the name was sent together with "eligibility requirements: either teaching, or having taught, philosophy, or having been trained in philosophy at least through the Master's degree." Returns from these requests also remain incomplete. The DIRECTORY is not an accrediting or rating agency, but merely a reporting agency. Its information is only as reliable as its sources. Many of those listed with asterisk have made their own reports. Relative completeness of Part II depends both upon the limited resources of the Editor and upon willingness of individuals to respond to requests for information. Doubtless thousands more are eligible for inclusions. Persons reported as deceased are listed at the end of Part II. The Editor plans no systematic effort to discover which persons listed in previous numbers of the DIRECTORY become deceased. But he plans to record all such deaths reported to him. Many names in the present list were derived from mail returned by postal authorities and marked "deceased," hence no dates of decease are given.
