Gas atomization remains the primary technique for producing powders used in metal additive manufacturing. The Vacuum Induction Melting Gas Atomization (VIGA) process, which is a close-coupled approach, is particularly suitable for generating spherical powders from non-reactive materials melted in a crucible via induction.A numerical model is developed to simulate gas flow dynamics through and downstream of the VIGA nozzle, as well as the fragmentation behavior of the molten metal. The influence of pressure (20-60 bar) and temperature (15-400 °C) of the atomization gas is studied to highlight their impact on the efficiency of the atomization process and particle formation. An increase in atomization pressure or temperature significantly enlarges the dimensions of Mach diamonds, enhances gas velocity, and boosts kinetic energy within the system, thereby promoting the production of fine powders. Results are discussed how to obtain good quality powder in a cost-efficient way.
