Abstract Although criticized for more than twenty years, the Doyle log rule persists in American forest practice. Scientists and practicing foresters alike have condemned it. Nevertheless it continues to be an important log rule, with which many foresters will be forced to deal in the future. This paper considers one forester's attempts to justify its use.
