Abstract With forest labor becoming scarce, forest investment becoming attractive, and some 25,000,000 acres or more in need of planting, interest in mechanical tree planting is growing rapidly. The author discusses general principles of operation of such machines, and their essential features of design. The machine developed at the University of Wisconsin is described in detail. Experience in operating these machines during the past three years is presented.
