The progress of civilization brings forth new and often more complex tasks and challenges for all disciplines and subdisciplines of science. These challenges involve addressing the demands of current socio-cultural, scientific, and political transformations, as well as the quality of life of the modern individual. Special pedagogy is no exception to these trends. While continuing its historical mission, it must think and adapt to current conditions and also create future prospects. In light of this, the article explores the current achievements in Polish special education as a scientific subdiscipline of pedagogy and considers potential directions for its development in the near (5-year) and more distant (10-year) future.
