Scientific journals are important carriers for inheriting knowledge, collecting academic achievements, and leading industrial innovation, which directly reflect a country's scientific competitiveness and cultural soft power. In response to the strategy of building prosperity through science and technology and to foster world-class scientific journals, the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) and six other departments/organizations launched the "Excellence Action Plan for China's STM Journals" program in 2019. As a high-standard new journal included in the plan, cMat is officially launched today. cMat is co-sponsored by Jiangxi Copper Corporation Limited (also referred to as "Jiangxi Copper", "the company" or "us") and the Nonferrous Metals Society of China (NFSOC), and published by Youke Publishing Co., Ltd. (Youke). Jiangxi Copper, a leading company in the global copper industry, is committed to creating a new horizon for China's modern copper industry. The company has established an industrial chain integrated with exploration, mining, ore dressing, smelting and processing in the field of copper and related nonferrous metals. Ten major industrial clusters are formed, namely copper, gold, lead and zinc, finance, new materials, equipment manufacturing, information technology, trade, sulfur-based chemicals, and environmental technology. The company has one research institute and 15 high-tech companies, and leads eight national and 11 provincial innovation platforms. Jiangxi Copper's profound experience and forward-looking vision in the copper industry have laid a solid foundation for cMat. The NFSOC has brought many top experts and global resources together to build a great academic platform for cMat. As a leading scientific publisher with rich experience, professionalism, and global vision, Youke will provide strong support for the international development of cMat. As an academic journal co-created by a world-leading enterprise, a national first-tier society, and a leading publisher, cMat has two important missions: (1) to answer General Secretary Jinping Xi's call to "write the paper on the land of our motherland," cMat will promote the deep integration of the innovation chain and industrial chain, and promote the transformation of scientific research findings into new quality productive forces; (2) to create a communication platform that gathers global wisdom and encourages innovation, cMat will facilitate the domestic application of international academic achievements and the overseas dissemination of domestic academic achievements, thereby enhancing the influence of Chinese scholars and expanding China's international discourse power in science and technology. cMat is a journal that focuses on the "C" fields, such as copper, chemistry, composite, catalyst, carbon, chip, coating, cycle, conduction, cell, etc., and related new materials. The scope of cMat also covers gold, silver, lead, zinc, tungsten, rare earth metals, precious metals, scattered metals, and cross-disciplinary research (metallurgy, mining, geology, etc.). We aim to build an innovation ecosystem that integrates scientific research, industry, and academia. This brand positioning not only reflects our deep understanding of the copper industry but also demonstrates our keen insight into technological development. Copper was one of the first metals ever extracted and used by humans, and it has made vital contributions to sustaining and improving society since the dawn of civilization. Copper is a critical material that is essential for several sectors including electricity, machinery, infrastructure, transportation, national defense, etc. In addition, copper-based materials have broad application prospects in semiconductor chips, smart terminals, communication equipment, green energy facility, and aerospace devices. Jiangxi Copper has set the strategic goal of "building a world-class enterprise with global core competitiveness" and has chosen "Science and Technology Innovation Jiangxi Copper" and "International Jiangxi Copper" as development paths. Considering the importance of copper, current and future demand, and Jiangxi Copper's industrial foundation, cMat will focus on copper and related materials. We firmly believe that copper, the ancient and charming metal, will rejuvenate in the new wave of science and technology and contribute to sustainable development. In addition to copper, cMat will focus on national major strategies, industrial foundations, key R&D programs, and "stranglehold" technologies. It will shine a spotlight on cross-disciplinary integration of multidisciplinary research and technology and aim to construct a copper-centered academic community and innovation ecosystem. We hope to collect excellent research and industrial innovation outcomes, thereby accelerating the integration and technological upgrades of the nonferrous metals industry with information technology, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, green energy, etc., and converting the outcomes into new quality productive forces. To achieve the goals, the journal's editorial board members have been carefully selected. The editorial board consists of 42 professionals (including four academicians) from top universities and institutes in 16 countries including China, the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, France, etc., and the members' research fields cover materials, metallurgy, physics, chemistry, electronics, etc. International editorial board members account for over 50% of total members, and the international Editor-in-Chief is Professor Zhenghe Xu. He is a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, an academician of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, an academician of the Royal Canadian Academy of Sciences, and the founding dean of School of Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology. The domestic Editor-in-Chief is Professor Xujun Mi, the dean of the Institute of Advanced Technology of South China University of Technology. The executive Editors-in-Chief are Professor Cyril O'Connor (Honorary Fellow of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and Professor Tiejun Zhu, the dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering of Zhejiang University. These experts have high reputations in their research fields, ensuring the academic quality of cMat. At the same time, we welcome experts and scholars from all over the world to join the editorial board or share research achievements and to exchange ideas in this journal. We are committed to supporting academic integrity, broadening academic horizons, improving service quality, and trying to let every article shine brightly. Our goal is to promote scientific and technological progress and industrial development of copper-based new materials and related cross-cutting and cutting-edge research areas. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the experts and scholars involved in the establishment of cMat. In particular, we owe special thanks to the six academicians, namely, the late Desheng Gu, Xiaowei Huang, Zhenghe Xu, Boyun Huang, Wenhai Zhang, and Hailing Tu for their strong support during the journal's founding process. We are confident that with the enthusiastic assistance and support from all the experts and scholars, cMat will develop its own style and features, achieve high standards, establish authority, and become a high-level scientific journal with international influence on copper-based new materials and related interdisciplinary and cutting-edge research areas!
