Grid-forming energy storage system (ESS) has the similar characteristics with the conventional synchronous generator to support the electricity grids. The impedance-based stability criterion is a simple and effective method to study the interactive stability between the ESS interfaced power converters and the electricity grids, while the self-stability of the power converter is generally studied based on either the transfer function or state space model, resulting in the inconsistency of stability analysis between the interactive stability and self-stability. Hence, an improved impedance modeling approach, which can study the aforementioned two types of stability, is proposed in this paper for the grid-forming converters of ESS. The correctness and effectiveness of the improved impedance model are validated by the simulation results.
