Abstract Weevil-killed leaders and dead lateral branches of Pinus strobus L. were compared as infection courts for Fomes pini . Eighty percent germination of basidiospores occurred on media containing cold water extracts of xylem from bases of weeviled leaders dead 1 to 20 years and lateral branches dead 10 or more years. Germination on similar media containing extracts from bases of lateral branches dead 1 year was 40 percent and on those dead 5 years was 0 to 2 percent. The pH of extracts from both weeviled leaders and bases of lateral branches was within a range favorable for germination.
