The subject of the article is the emergence and development of the debate surrounding youth poetry in the Soviet Armenian literary context from 1969 to 1971, with special emphasis on Hovhannes Grigoryan’s role in this process. The aim of the research is to analyze this debate and clarify the issues that arose regarding poetic language, form, content, tradition, and innovation. The study examines responses from both literary critics and poets, presenting contrasting evaluations that highlight the challenges of free verse, punctuation, and the search for the new generation’s originality. Different perspectives are reflected, ranging from criticism of young poets to their defense. The article also addresses the assessment of foreign literary influences, seen either as enriching or as a threat to national identity. The article applies a combination of literary analysis and historical-comparative methodology through a comparative study of the debate materials from 1969–1971. The study shows that the debate on youth poetry established an important foundation for understanding the course of modern Armenian literature, for assessing the process of forming new creative directions, and for revealing the interaction of national and global influences, presenting their role in the further development of Armenian poetry.
