The evaluation comprised the excavation of one 10m x 1.8m trench. The trench was located to sample the footprint of the proposed dwelling. The original 15m length of the trench could not be excavated in full due to overhead cables and other site constraints. This was communicated to SCCAS and was agreed to be sufficient in this case. Trenches were set out and overburden was stripped using a mechanical excavator fitted with a toothless grading bucket. All machining was conducted under archaeological supervision to the top of the natural substrate, which was the level at which archaeological features were first encountered. Archaeological features/deposits were investigated, planned and recorded. No deposits were identified that required environmental sampling (due to postmedieval dating evidence). In November 2024, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological evaluation at Land Opposite 3 Coulson Lane, Brandon, Suffolk. The proposed development was for residential use of the site comprising a single dwelling. One trench was excavated. The single trench revealed modern features, with a deep garden soil, made ground, soak away and a rubbish pit. Two archaeological features were revealed, a ditch and small pit, both dated to the post-medieval period. Residual finds of struck flint dating to the Neolithic period and Late Saxon pottery were also recovered from the feature fills.
