The purpose of this study is to present using authentic books for children in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) at the kindergarten as a pleasant and fruitful experience both for the teacher and the learners. It consists of a literature review defining the notion of children’s literature and its place in TEFL at the kindergarten. There are suggested various classifications of children’s books appropriate for very young learners and our own containing examples of each type. Criteria for choosing them are outlined. Other authors’ steps and our own in TEFL to very young learners through stories and authentic books are mentioned as well as ideas for using the books with very young learners. The suggested activities can easily be adapted to other contexts of foreign language teaching. The study is a product of a long theoretical and practical work.
