TAO Dance Theater stands out internationally for its unique choreographic approach characterized by of minimalism and abstract narrative in his choreography. However, the minimalist choreographic language and the spatial composition have received relatively little scholarly attention. By looking at selected works from TAO Dance Theater’s Numerical Series, this paper considers how theatrical meaning and emotional resonance can emerge in the absence of conventional narrative or symbolic content. Through careful performance analysis, case studies, and theoretical explorations which rooted in phenomenology, Taoism, and postmodern theater, the paper asks how repetition, spatial dynamics and physical constraints congeal around audience perception. From these findings, it appears that TAO Dance Theater subverts the sense of theatricality by placing emphasis on bodily presence and prescribed rhythm, creating contemplative as well as emotional experience.
