Synoptic factors associated with the development of a tornado at Byford, 20 miles south of Perth, on 1st January 1960 are discussed and features of the track examined in detail. A method of classification of tornadoes into cyclonic and convective categories is suggested and a plea is made for the establishment of a comprehensive case history file to facilitate development of criteria to permit a more objective approach to the forecasting of tornadoes in the Australian region.
