Commensal bacteria: An under-recognized cause of pneumonia
Key Points
To investigate the role of commensal bacteria in causing community-acquired pneumonia.
Review of pneumonia cases with unidentified etiologic agents
Analysis of respiratory flora samples
Comparison of cases with known bacterial infections
Commensal bacteria were linked to several pneumonia cases previously thought to be unidentified
A significant proportion of community-acquired pneumonia cases involved normal respiratory flora
Identifying these bacteria could improve pneumonia diagnosis and treatment
Abstract
An etiologic agent is not identified in many cases of community-acquired pneumonia. So-called ‘normal respiratory flora’ or ‘commensal bacteria’ may be responsible for a substantial proportion of cases.
