ABSTRACT The history of accrediting with specific reference to optometry is presented. Rationale of accrediting, establishment of standards, clicitation of information, and upgrading of optometric education will be discussed. The importance of the accrediting agency in the future development of the profession in such areas as technician training, continuing education, and certification of specialties is covered.
