Abstract During revisionary work on black flies in Sumatra, Indonesia, the species formerly identified as Simulium (Simulium) bishopi Takaoka and Davies, which was originally described from Peninsular Malaysia and assigned to the S. melanopus species-group, was reevaluated by morphologically reexamining two females, one male, and their pupal exuviae and cocoons. The results reveal that this new species is distinguished from S. (S.) bishopi in the male by the smaller number of upper-eye (large) facets in 15 vertical columns and 16 horizontal rows, ventral plate constricted basally when viewed caudally, and paramere without setae on its basal surface, and in the female by the cibarium with only round small processes. This species is described as S. (S.) barisanense sp. nov. and taxonomic notes to separate it from S. (S.) bishopi and other related species are given. Thus, the record of S. (S.) bishopi from Sumatra is removed.
