This position paper describes current gaps, best practices and a strategic vision for the professionalisation of Research Data Management (RDM) Specialists at ETH Zurich and makes recommendations for further measures. The paper emerged in the context of the Open Research Data Programme of the ETH Domain (2020–2026) and the Open Science Programmes of swissuniversities (2021–2024 and 2025-2028). These programmes demonstrated that RDM Specialists play an increasingly important role in the research process and in rendering digital research outputs accessible and reusable. Drawing on this experience, the paper outlines the present landscape for RDM Specialists at ETH Zurich and suggests ways to strengthen their contribution within the institution. The ETH FAIR Board has reviewed the paper and proposes that its content be taken into account in the ongoing FAIR Coalition initiative aimed at implementing the FAIR principles at ETH Zurich.
