Electronic Prescription Systems in Kenyan Hospitals: An Analysis of Misuse Prevention Efforts

Electronic Prescription Systems (EPS) are integral in modern healthcare to enhance efficiency and reduce errors. In Kenya, hospitals have implemented EPS with varying degrees of success. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar to identify relevant studies on EPS implementation and its impact on medication misuse. Findings indicate that while some hospitals have successfully reduced the incidence of prescription errors by over 20%, others still face challenges in fully utilising the system's potential, particularly with regards to adherence to national guidelines regarding drug usage. The analysis suggests that despite initial successes, there is a need for ongoing training and support to ensure effective utilization of EPS in preventing misuse of medicines. Hospitals should implement comprehensive training programmes for staff on the proper use of EPS. Additionally, regular audits should be conducted to monitor adherence to national guidelines. Treatment effect was estimated with logit (pᵢ) =₀+^ Xᵢ, and uncertainty reported using confidence-interval based inference.
