This first of two articles explains how the Cuban Revolution succeeded in building a comprehensive, universal, and free public health system, from the disadvantaged situation of a small Southern country without natural resources and under US sanctions. It then examines the origins and development of the local pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, as well as the major stakeholders in medical research and their recent scientific achievements. It then presents Cuba’s international cooperation in medical research and exports.
