Transitional Justice Mechanisms in Post-Elimination Sierra Leone: A Peacebuilding Analysis

Post-Elimination Sierra Leone has faced significant challenges in post-conflict reconstruction following a decade-long civil war and subsequent peace agreement. This research employs a qualitative approach, analysing secondary data including TRC reports, government documents, interviews with stakeholders, and public opinion surveys to assess the implementation and outcomes of transitional justice mechanisms in Sierra Leone. The TRC's investigations revealed that approximately 85% of victims reported improvements in societal trust following its findings, though challenges persist in ensuring judicial follow-through for perpetrators and addressing grievances effectively across all regions. Transitional justice mechanisms have played a crucial role in Sierra Leone's peacebuilding process by addressing historical injustices and fostering national unity. However, their full effectiveness remains contingent on continued support from the international community and sustained efforts towards institutional strengthening. The government should prioritise legislative reforms to ensure the TRC's recommendations are legally enforceable and incorporate additional measures such as reparative programmes for victims. International partners must continue to provide technical assistance and funding to sustain transitional justice initiatives.
