Purpose The Integrated Management System (IMS) is a key element in organizations as it unifies different certifiable management systems, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Its proper implementation improves operational efficiency, reduces waste, strengthens organizational culture, and increases competitiveness in the market. The aim of this study is to develop a framework with guidelines for the development and maintenance of IMS. Design/methodology/approach To do this, the Technical-Scientific Scenario mapping method was used, which included an analysis of good practices from companies awarded by the European Foundation for Quality Management, as well as a review of academic literature and the authors' experience on the subject. Findings The main scientific contribution of this study is the development of an original framework that systematically integrates five critical factors for the implementation and maintenance of IMS. Differently from previous studies that approach IMS implementation in a fragmented way or in the context of a single sector, this research consolidates empirical evidence from organizations awarded and recognized by the European Foundation for Quality Management and combines it with theoretical insights from academic literature. This integrative approach contributes to the literature by offering a structured and replicable model that enables organizations to navigate the complexity of IMS more effectively. Research limitations/implications Despite the relevant contributions of this study, it is important to recognize some limitations. The technical analysis was based exclusively on reports from organizations awarded by the EFQM in 2022, which can restrict the generalization of the results to other companies or sectors not covered by the award. Another limitation is the geographical scope, which focused on the three most prominent countries on the subject in the period analyzed (Brazil, Portugal and Spain), which may not fully reflect the diversity of practices and challenges of implementing the Integrated Management System in other cultural or economic contexts. These limitations provide scope for future research that includes a broader and more diverse sample of organizations and countries related to the topic. Practical implications For companies, the framework provides practical recommendations to help reduce bureaucracy, optimize resources and improve regulatory compliance, ensuring greater efficiency and strategic alignment with stakeholders. Originality/value The effective integration of these factors enhances synergy between employees and optimized processes, promoting a safer and more sustainable working environment. The study's scientific contribution lies in consolidating good practices and proposing a structured model for improving IMS. For companies, the framework provides practical recommendations to help reduce bureaucracy, optimize resources and improve regulatory compliance, ensuring greater efficiency and strategic alignment with stakeholders.
