( Aust N Z J Obstet Gynaecol . 2025;65:183-189. doi: 10.1111/ajo.13888.) Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood disorder of hemoglobin (Hb) that alters the shape and function of red blood cells. Though still considered rare in Australia, the prevalence of SCD is growing due to increased migration and longer life expectancies. This, in turn, has led to a rise in pregnancies among women with SCD, a group that faces heightened risks of maternal and fetal complications. Despite the limited number of individuals officially registered with SCD in Australia, underreporting suggests actual numbers may be higher.
