This article presents an oil painting depicting an obstetric anesthesiologist preparing to place a spinal for a cesarean delivery in a resource-limited environment in Malawi.
ARTIST STATEMENT This oil painting depicts me preparing to place a spinal for a cesarean delivery. I am cleaning the back with a chlorhexidine-soaked gauze in the operating room in Lilongwe, Malawi, in 2019. The mirror seen in the painting was above the handwashing sink the obstetricians used, which I liked because it is a visual depiction of my own reflection. There is a paper chart at bedside, highlighting the differences and difficulties of practicing medicine in a resource-limited environment.
