This paper investigates the intrinsic motivation of learning English from the phonetic perspectives.Quantitative research is thus conducted to analyze the correlation between practical phonetic instruction and the language learners' intrinsic motivation.Based on the result of the preliminary questionnaire concerning the learners' self-awareness and willingness about learning English with a special focus on pronunciation, the effectiveness of pronunciation, especially suprasegmentals instruction is revealed from linguistic and psychological perspectives.A sample of 83 Japanese first-year university students enrolled in liberal arts English classes were surveyed. The results reveal the significant effect of suprasegmentals instruction on the intrinsic motivation of English learning in addition to the nature of EFL learners' selfesteem.
