Outside of the extended discussions in each English Discussion Class lesson, teachers make concerted efforts to increase student-student interaction, providing more communicative learning opportunities typically during the function presentation and pre and post discussion activities. The goal of this classroom project was to further increase student involvement and learning opportunities, by assigning students roles often carried out by the teacher.Additional goals included providing different communicative language challenges and a greater sense of control and autonomy in their lessons.Classroom observations and feedback from students surveyed showed that they had positive attitudes towards performing the roles and furthermore, expressed a desire for more responsibility and control in their lessons.
