Preceptors are integral to onboarding, developing, and retaining new nurses, yet maintaining a pool of enthusiastic preceptors proves difficult. This study adds to our knowledge of the necessary components for preceptor success and highlights opportunities for bridging the gap between ideal and reality in supporting a pool of thriving preceptors. Nursing professional development practitioners are integral to bridging this gap through encouragement, frequent check-ins, offering education on learning styles, and promoting networks of peer support.
