The article's authors analyze the role of the rear in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 and conclude that Victory would have been impossible without the monolithic unity of the army and the people. The article examines the phenomenon of the Soviet rear from several perspectives. These include the unprecedented evacuation of industry and the launch of weapons production «on the fly» the technological breakthroughs in metallurgy and tank building, the heroic labor of women and adolescents, the resolution of the food crisis, and the contributions of science, medicine, and culture to achieving Victory.
