Plants are relatively simple organisms, but they contain a diversity of cell types, tissues, and organs. Many species have remarkable regeneration capacity, including the ability to form embryos from somatic cells cultured in vitro. Since there is no cell movement during plant development, the position of cells reflects their origin. The process of development continues indefinitely at the growing points, and major changes in development (e.g., commitment to flower) can be triggered by simple environmental signals, such as day length.
