The causes of corrosion damage on the surface of metallic structures in the Far North regions are described. The main attention is paid to the development of electrochemical corrosion occurring on the surface of aluminum samples. The main types of corrosion damage and the features of their onset are discussed. Electrochemical reactions in the cathode and anode zones on the surface of a metal structure are presented for to explain the occurring processes. In order to illustrate electrochemical processes, corrosion patterns inherent in aluminum in pure and salt water are given. A Pourbaix diagram for aluminum in an aqueous solution in the presence of filamentous corrosion is constructed. Experimental results obtained at the MADI for a combined process of the surface modification of 09G2S grade steel, products made of which are used for manufacturing metallic structures operating in the Far North regions of Russia, as well as for mounting complicated welded parts, are described. It has been found that the obtained nitrided zinc coatings exhibit a good corrosion resistance in a saline environment.
