The archaeological Desk-Based Assessment was undertaken in accordance with current best practice and the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists Standard and guidance for desk-based assessment (CIfA 2017). The study area for non-designated cultural heritage assets, Listed Buildings, Scheduled Ancient Monuments, World Heritage Sites and Registered Historic Landscapes was defined as a zone 0.5km from the centre of the proposed development site (1km total width). The Desk-Based Assessment and field visit identified 104 known heritage assets in the study area, of which the former Dog and Partridge Public House (HER 14819.1.0) was located on the Site. The Site itself has reportedly been built upon since at least 1680. The field visit identified the partially demolished remains of a 1980s building on the Site which contained deep basements to the Churchgate frontage, but basements of unknown depth towards the rear. A basement to the front of no. 4 Churchgate reportedly contained oak beams which could relate to an earlier structure on Site. There is therefore low potential for buried archaeological remains to the Churchgate frontage of the Site due to the known basements and low to moderate potential for buried archaeological remains to the rear of the Site, which could represent the earlier medieval or post-medieval use of the Site. There is localised potential in the area of No. 4 Churchgate for limited remains of a post-medieval basement.
