A Programme of Archaeological Mitigatory Works Commencing with Trial Trenching was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd (PCA) on Land off Norwich Road, Hingham, centred on Ordnance Survey National Grid Reference (NGR) TG 0302 0201. Fieldwork was undertaken from 16th of September to 4th October 2024. The work was commissioned by Abel Homes Ltd as pre-application ahead of a planning application for development of the site for housing. The trial trenching was carried out in accordance with a Written Scheme of Investigation prepared by PCA (Boughton and Crawley) in response to archaeological advice issued by Steve Hickling (CNF49849) of the Historic Environment Service of Norfolk County Council (HES/NCC). Archaeological remains uncovered included groups of Iron Age pits, with evidence for storage and rubbish disposal, a limited number of Roman features and a single Late Anglo-Saxon pit. The project also uncovered good evidence for a 12th to 13th-century windmill represented by a large ring-ditch, medieval pottery, and large amounts of quern fragments. Following the abandonment of the windmill, the field was utilised solely for agricultural use and the mill mound was eventually ploughed flat. Some field boundaries were established in the post-medieval period.
