Wessex Archaeology has been commissioned by RPS Consulting Services Ltd to produce a report outlining the results of an archaeological walkover survey at Tilbury 3, Substation Road, Tilbury, Essex. The Site is centred on 566577, 175471 (TQ 66577 75471). The walkover along the foreshore aimed to identify, record, map and photograph any historical and archaeological deposits, finds and features that may be at risk from any proposed development. Additionally, the edge of saltmarsh was assessed to identify and record deposits (e.g. peat, buried soil) of geoarchaeological interest. The archaeological walkover survey was conducted along River Thames covering c. 1.7 km long and c. 50 m wide transect. The surveyed foreshore encompassed area of mudflats lying at c. 0.3 m OD and higher saltmarsh covered by vegetation with elevations of c. 3.5 m OD. The visual inspection of the foreshore area identified no deposits or remains of archaeological and geoarchaeological interest. Based on previous geoarchaeological research and geotechnical data, the uppermost peat deposits can be present at c. -0.3 m OD within the Site boundaries. This would mean that deposit of archaeological interested are sealed by at least 1.6 m of post-Roman tidal deposits (alluvium). The walkover survey recorded Second World War pillbox (HER record 10287) which is of historical interest. Remnants of wooden structures are undated but likely to be associated with old groynes. The demolition debris, boats and abandoned pier and pier are likely to be part of the infrastructure associated with the demolished power stations - Tilbury A and B.
