High tech industries are thought to precipitate structural change in local economies through the creation of backward and forward linkages and new firm spinoffs. Case studies of high tech firms and products indicate interindustry linkage development is closely associated with product type and organizational structure of firms. Three product configurations, one-of-a-kind, customized and standardized, generate differing levels of linkage and spinoff potential. Firms producing customized products with highly variable input structures and established subcontracting relationships are more amenable to linkage and spinoff creation than firms producing one-of-a-kind or standardized products. The potential for linked industry development is further diluted because the spatial expansion path of high tech firms has been through the creation of ‘technical branch plants’ which are stand-alone profit centres. Moreover, technical branch plant support for industrial complex development is inversely related to the strength of the linkage to the parent headquarters location. GLASMEIER A. On considère que les industries à haute-technologie alimentent le processus de mutation structurelle au sein des économies locales par moyen des liens en amont et en aval et des retombées sous forme de nouvelles entreprises. A partir des cas d'etude des entreprises et des produits à haute-technologie il s'avère que le développement des échanges intersectoriels est étroitement lié à la catégorie de produits et à l'organisation de l'entre-prise. Trois catégories de produits, à l'unité, sur commande et en série donnent naissance à des degrés différents de potentiel relatif aux liens et aux retombées. Les entreprises qui fabriquent sur commande dont les inputs varient énormément, et qui jouissent des rapports bien établis avec leurs sous-traitants sont plus propices à la création de liens et de retombées que les entreprises qui fabriquent à l'unité ou en série. Les possibilités du développement industriel intersectoriel sont d'autant plus diluées que le sentier de croissance géographique des entreprises à haute technologie a passé par la création d'établissements techniques qui sont des centres de profit autonomes. Qui plus est, le soutien des établissements techniques au développement industriel intersectoriel se rapporte inversement ä la force du lien avec le siège de la sociéte-mère. GLASMEIER A. Es wird ange-nommen, dass Industrien der Hochtechnologie Struktur-wechsel in der örtlichen Wirtschaft beschleunigen, indem sie Verbindungen hierhin und dahin schaffen und neue Firmen sich gewissermassen aus sekundären Linien ergeben. Untersuchungen von Hochtechologiefirmen und-produk-ten weisen darauf hin, dass die Entwicklung von Verknüp-fungen eng mit dem Produkttyp und der organisatorischen Struktur der Firmen verbunden ist. Drei Produktgestal-tungen: Standarderzeugnisse, Produkte, bei denen Kunden-wünsche zusätzlich berücksichtigt werden und Sonderan-fertigungen bewirken Verknüpfungen auf verschiedenen Ebenen. Firmen, die Erzeugnisse mit sehr unterschiedlichen Aufwandstrukturen und festeingeführten Nebenkontrakt-beziehungen produzieren, sind eher gewillt, Verbindungen einzugehen und sekundäre Linien zu schaffen als solche, die nur ein Produkt oder Standardprodukte herstellen. Das Potential für Zusammenarbeit bei industrieller Entwicklung wird weiterhin reduziert, da der Weg zur räumlichen Ausweitung der Hochtechnologiefirmen über die Schaffung ‘technischer Zweigniederlassungen’ führte, die selbststän-dige, getrennt abrechnende Zentren sind. Zudem steht die Unterstützung durch technische Zweigniederlassungen für die Entwicklung eines Industriekomplexes im umgekehrten Verhältnis zur Stärke der Beziehung zum Standort der ursprünglichen Hauptgeschäftsstelle.
