Archaeological monitoring and recording at No. 1-2 Catherine Street, Exeter, Devon

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken by Oakford Archaeology between March and April 2024 at Nos. 1-2 Catherine Street, Exeter, Devon. The site is located within the historic core of Exeter (Fig. 1) and immediately to the north of the Cathedral Green Scheduled Monument (1002632), within the area of the Roman legionary fortress, later Roman civil activity, Saxon, medieval and post-medieval activity, and the work was therefore required by the Archaeological Consultant to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral and the Exeter City Council Principal Project Manager Heritage A watching brief was maintained during works associated with repairs to the water main. The work involved the excavation of two trenches measuring c. 1.5 metres long, 1 metre wide and 0.6 metres deep, and c.1.75 metres long, 1 metre wide and a maximum of 0.4m deep respectively. Inspection of Trench 1 indicated that the works were contained entirely within the fills of the existing service trench and ancillary service lines. The deposit sequence in Trench 2 was identical, and the work failed to reveal any evidence for buried archaeological features, deposits or dating evidence. Nothing of significance was found
