Underlying Circuits of Social Support for Bullied Victims: An Appraisal-Based Perspective on Supportive Communication and Postbullying Adjustment

This study examined the working mechanisms of social support for victims of bullying. Structural equation modeling analyses based on retrospective survey data (N = 448) revealed that the effects of supportive messages varied distinctively, depending on the content of the messages; emotional and esteem support enhanced, but network support impeded, positive reappraisal (the effects of informational support were not significant). Except for that which was related to network support, discrepancy between desired and received support was associated with less positive appraisal. Finally, positive appraisal was found to enhance victims' postbullying adjustment both behaviorally and psychologically. These findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical implications with reference to the literature on social support and coping of bullied victims. Les circuits sous-jacents de soutien social des victimes d’intimidation : une perspective basee sur l’evaluation de la communication de soutien et l’ajustement post-intimidation L’etude a examine les mecanismes de soutien social des victimes d’intimidation. Des analyses de modelisation par equation structurelle fondees sur des donnees d’enquete retrospective (N = 448) ont revele que les effets des messages de soutien variaient plutot distinctement selon le contenu des messages. Le soutien emotionnel et le soutien d’estime augmentaient la reevaluation positive tandis que le soutien de reseau entravait celle-ci (les effets du soutien informationnel n’etaient pas significatifs). A l’exception de ce qui etait lie au soutien de reseau, une disparite entre le soutien desire et le soutien recu correspondait a une evaluation moins positive. Enfin, une evaluation positive ameliorait l’ajustement post-intimidation des victimes aux plans tant comportemental que psychologique. Ces resultats sont commentes en regard de leurs consequences theoriques et pratiques et en lien avec la litterature sur le soutien social et l’ajustement (coping) des victimes d’intimidation. Lasst man die Ergebnisse fur Netzwerkunterstutzung ausen vor, zeigte sich, dass eine Abweichung zwischen erwunschter und erhaltener Unterstutzung mit einer weniger positiven Bewertung verbunden war. Schlieslich konnte auch gezeigt werden, dass eine positive Bewertung die Anpassung der Opfer nach dem Mobbing sowohl bezogen auf das Verhalten als auch psychologisch, forderte. Diese Ergebnisse werden hinsichtlich ihrer theoretischen und praktischen Implikationen im Zusammenhang mit der Literatur zu sozialer Unterstutzung und der Bewaltigungsarbeit von Mobbingopfern diskutiert.
